Christmas 2005 ~ My first Christmas Outside the States!

Sandy and Chris ~ Christmas Eve 2005

Camp Fallujah, Iraq

Unfortunately, the Iraqi bad guys were not playing nice on Christmas Eve. Even though we complied when they asked us to respect their holy month of Ramadan - they were not respectful of our holiday. They placed an IED in the path of the convoy carrying the Christmas presents! Luckily, no one was hurt and there was no damage - but the convoy had to turn around without delivering our packages :(

We spent the day listening to Christmas carols, taking pictures and hanging out with our co-workers. We went to church service at 6:30 and then went to the Dining Facility with our friends from church for our Christmas dinner. As usual, they had an awesome feast for us. The girls who serve the food dressed in little red Santa skirts and shirts. They had Karaoke there, so we stayed for quite sometime after dinner watching a few people share their talents and many people make fools of themselves ;) It was actually a very good day. Although we would have much rather spent the holidays with our family back in the states, we had a great day with our new friends here.

At the dining facility, they had a feast comparable to what we have seen on cruise ships. They had lots of food carvings and had two sculptures made out of lard - one of Mary and baby Jesus and one of Jesus. We had all the regular customary Christmas dishes as well as the lobster, shrimp etc. There was plenty of sparkling cider and eggnog.

The local nationals who work here on base seemed to be as
excited about Christmas as we were. It was really neat to see them experience what was for most of them, their first Christmas. Their English is not always good - but they sure did pronounce "Merry Christmas" clearly and with conviction. It was a really neat experience to be part of their first celebration of Christ's birth.
